Danish study shows the importance of a medical evaluation for every child who attends Barnahus
During a 2-year pilot, 100% of children (205 in total) who were suspected of experiencing violence in close relationships and who were referred to Barnahus via the Copenhagen police for an audio-visually recorded investigative interview were systematically offered a forensic medical screening.
Barnahus in the news – spring 2022
Announcing 6 Barnahus openings during January to May 2022, the outcome of Cyprus’ UN CRC periodic report, Scotland’s Barnahus vision, and South Korea’s referencing of the Barnahus model, and more.
Swedish Institute funded PROMISE training and exchange
Since November 2021, the Swedish Institute has been co-funding a PROMISE project which is delivering training and exchange to Armenia, Estonia, Georgia, and Moldova.

During 2021, the Network played a key consultative role for a number of countries on their journeys to establishing or expanding their Barnahus, and engaged with international actors to spread a common understanding of the model and to unlock opportunities for collaboration and funding.
General assembly 2022 adopts fundraising procedure, requests guidance on scaling up
Members agreed on the need for exchange, research, and guidance on scaling up Barnahus nationally. In particular: information about how many locations and of which size are needed to service a population, ensuring quality services nation wide, and ensuring equitable services for remote, small, or marginalized communities.

Barnahus in the news – Fall 2018
Barnahus Tartu, Estonia opened on 26 September. This is the second service in Estonia, which was a pilot country in PROMISE 1 and a partner in PROMISE 2.
Childhood Haus Leipzig, Germany opened on 27 September. This is the first service to launch in Germany, which was a pilot country in PROMISE 1 and a partner in PROMISE 2.
UK’s first Child Houses for young victims of sexual abuse have launched
The Lighthouse team will work together to support children, young people and their families through their journey. We have specially trained medical professionals, specialist therapists, advocates, police officers and social workers on hand to help with children’s recoveries. And we make sure all the children we support receive all of this in one familiar and child-friendly place.

This spring the BBC produced a 3-minute clip about the Icelandic Barnahus and the momentum in the UK to implement the model. The BBC reports the Children’s Commissioner for England would like to pilot the model, and Home Office funded pilot schemes should start next year.

Swedish experts join roundtable in Germany on interdisciplinary teamwork
On 26 June 2018, a roundtable was organized on child-friendly and interdisciplinary approaches to suspicion, assistance and criminal case handling in cases of sexual abuse. PROMISE Experts Britta Bäumer from Barnahus Stockholm and Helena Asplund from Barnahus Linköping were on hand to give the Swedish perspective. The meeting was organized by the World Childhood Foundation Germany as part of the PROMISE 2 project.

West Hungary workshop discusses national legislation related to Barnahus
As a result of the workshop, legislative amendments needed for full implementation of the Barnahus model will be developed. The workshop was organised back-to-back with an international child protection conference.

Cutting ribbons in Hungary
Warmest congratulations to Hungary, a PROMISE Pilot Country, for its formal opening of the Barnahus in Szombathely. Among those pictured cutting the ribbon is Bragi Guðbrandsson, General Director of the Icelandic Agency for Child protection and also one of our esteemed experts on the PROMISE Project. There are several initiatives in Hungary that are working to establish child friendly centres. Maria Dr. Mária Lazáryné Illés, one of our pilot country representatives, was influential in formally opening this particular location.

Poland has 4 Barnahus in operation, supported by a national network
The Polish Barnahus form a network coordinated by the Empowering Children Foundation. Two Barnahus are operated by the Empowering Children Foundation (Warsaw and Starogard, Gdanski) and two others are opreated by local NGO’s. Each Barnahus is supported by the Velux Foundation and local authorities, has funding secured for several years, and is committed to meeting the Barnahus Quality Standards.

Warsaw roundtable discusses opportunities and challenges for multidisciplinary interagency cooperation
The event discussed opportunities and challenges for multidisciplinary interagency cooperation. After the seminar, the participant took a guided tour of the newly opened Barnahus Warsaw.

Introducing the founding members of the Network
The founding members of the PROMISE Barnahus Network have made a notable impact on the spread of Barnahus throughout Europe and are committed to promoting this model of multi-disciplinary and interagency interventions for child victims and witnesses of violence.

Linköping inspires a European movement to establish Barnahus
At the meeting, HM Queen Silvia returned to Linköping, 11 years after inaugurating the first Barnahus in Sweden, to give her support to the European Barnahus movement. Her advocacy played a key role in the establishment of Barnahus in Sweden. The World Childhood Foundation, which The Queen founded, helped to establish Barnahus Linköping and continues to support the establishment of Barnahus around the world.
